What is a USDA Hardiness Zone?

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map divides North America into 13 zones based on average annual minimum winter temperature. Each zone is 10°F warmer (or colder) than the adjacent zone. Sub-zones (a and b) split each zone into 5°F increments. Your zone determines which perennials survive your winters and, more importantly for vegetable gardening, your frost dates. Frost dates tell you when it's safe to transplant warm-season crops outdoors and when to expect the first fall frost.
